It's Never Too Early to Intervene in an Emotional Emergency

About 16.5% of the United States population, or about 46.3 million people aged 12 or older, met the criteria for having a substance use disorder in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Though it is a treatable mental disorder, 94% of those individuals did not receive any treatment.

Substance use disorder affects a person’s brain and behavior, causing an inability to control their use of legal or illegal drugs, alcohol or medication. The long-lasting effects of the disorder can be destructive, causing physical, mental and emotional damage.

As part of its commitment to normalizing meaningful dialogue on mental health and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, South Texas Health System Behavioral will talk about substance use disorder in its next “Let’s Talk Mental Health” webinar. This special online seminar will discuss the importance of seeking help if you or a loved one is having trouble getting a handle on their substance use.
