Transplant Process

transplant processPre-transplant
The minute your physician refers you for a kidney transplant, your process begins. It’s important for you to know everything possible about what to expect, so we recommend you attend a class led by a nurse coordinator. Here, you’ll learn about pre-transplant, the transplant itself, all the way through post-transplant.

Then it’s determined if you are a transplant candidate through examination and tests by your kidney doctor. Once you’re cleared, you’ll have more tests to discover how sensitive your body might be to foreign tissues. This is key in finding the right donated kidney for you. Your donor will undergo tests in order to help complete the match.

Post-transplant follow-up
Your new kidney will need help getting used to you and your body so your kidney doctor will prescribe a number of immunosuppressive (anti-rejection) medications. Be assured that you’ll be closely monitored by your transplant team. We will work closely with your nephrologist and primary care physician in arranging effective follow-up check-ups and tests.

Talk with us to learn more
As you can see, the transplant process is lengthy. We’ll help guide you through every step of the way. Talk with us right from the beginning and at any time.
