Political Structure
Only 10 minutes apart by car, Edinburg and McAllen have a commissioner-manager form of government in which the mayor and elected commissioners serve as the legislative body.  Edinburg has four elected commissioners that serve, while McAllen has six.

Business/Economy
The city economies combine a strong, yet diverse, infrastructure with a dynamic approach to growth and development. Trade and industry benefit from an expanding relationship with Mexico. An irrigation system has transformed desert into oasis, creating a "magic" land where crops are produced year round.

Both cities offer excellent transportation systems. Their gateway location on the northern edge of the Rio Grande Valley affords easy access to a highway system that stretches from the Canadian border to Mexico's northernmost tourist attractions. Reynosa, Monterey, Saltillo and other centers are all close by.
 
Education
There is a diverse selection of public and private elementary and high schools. The University of Texas Pan American, located in Edinburg, is a respected educational institution and a cultural center that enriches the life of the community as a whole. South Texas Community College and Texas State Technical College round out the educational picture with a broad selection of technical and academic degree programs. Within a 150-mile radius of McAllen, there are 15 institutions of higher learning, which include vocational schools and universities.
